Frequently Asked Questions
Understanding your surface
Tadelakt and compressed lime are not cost-saving options
Tadelakt is a living, organic product with a very low carbon footprint
Materials are sourced as locally as possible, representing a commitment to sustainabilityBy nature, Tadelakt absorbs moisture and oils, over time it will actually dissolve fats
Chemical sealants can be used, but Tadelakt will always seek to breathe
Moisture may temporarily darken areas before drying naturallyWall–floor transitions may absorb moisture more readily — this is normal and will dry out over time
Tadelakt and microcement are not comparable to ceramic, porcelain, or granite
These materials are baked or compressed over thousands of yearsTadelakt will gradually return to limestone over time. It needs time to cure and harden by reabsorbing CO2 from the air. Often it takes 6 months for it to reach its ‘rock solid’ cure point.
When new, it is young and requires nurturingIn its first days, the surface may appear splotchy — this is normal
Pigments are UV-stable and will not fade
Fissures are not cracks
They are natural responses to movement, drying, and moisture releaseCracks, by contrast, result from structural forces and must be addressed
Lime has the ability to self-heal, gradually crystallising into voids over time
That is a difficult question to ask, but they are time tested. A lot of the strength comes down to the substrate prep. Also level of sheen effects durability. The higher the shine, the more resistant it is to staining for example. But in general, clay plaster resembles wood in its durability while lime is comparable to a natural stone tile once fully cured. There are ways and techniques to make plasters more durable.
There are ranges of colors based on the desired plaster (Lime bleaches colors white, clay is more neutral and has a wider color range)
Also different pigments vary considerably in price, a ochre yellow for example is quite cost effective while a brilliant blue is expensive (especially in lime)
Textures vary based on type of application- In a shower for example it is required to have a smooth polished texture for water tightness where a hood fan can have a high variety of textures.
